I come accross this problem, the output area from IDRISI using crosstab and the tabulate area from ArcGIS are different. I used the same exact datasets, the IDRISI data are the ones imported from ArcGIS.
has anyone come accros this? in the end I don't know which number to use as a final result of my analysis

The numbers in the cross-tabulation table in IDRISI represent the number of cells in that category. In the Tabulate Area tool in ArcGIS the numbers are the actual area (square meters, square kilometers, etc.) in each category. Both IDRISI and ArcGIS calculate the cross-tabulation values correctly, the difference is the units of the values that are reported. You can check this by multiplying the values (i.e. number of cells in each category) in your IDRISI cross-tabulation table by the area per cell, which should equal the area reported by the Tabulate Area tool in ArcGIS.
The numbers you choose to use as a final result of your analysis will depend on whether you want to report the number of cells or the area.
