Landsat 7 scan line correction tool?

Hi to the forum and the help-desk,

 

I currently use Idrisi Andes. I have acquired 2012 Landsat7 images from USGS - which due to the sensor's failure, now come standard with scan line errors across each scene. 2 questions pertaining to this issue follow:

1. Does Idrisi have a tool that allows the user to fill the focal image's missing data (scan lines) with those present in a secondary image? I have found details of doing this in ENVI or ERdas but would prefer to use Idris as I am more familiar with the way the software works.

2.Following the scan line data fill (if successful),there will still be some 'no data values' present in the final image - as the scan line gaps in both initial images have a degree of overlap to begin with.

Does Idris have another tool that can resample only these remaining 'no data' pixels with their nearest neighbours that have spectral (pixel) values present - i.e. an interpolation of sorts across all the bands?

  Hi Kaera,

  To answer your questions:

  1- IDRISI does not include a tool that can rectify such large gaps in a data set such as the data available from Landsat 7.  We generally do not recommend working with data that has so many missing values.  If you would like to complete this process through another software such as ERdas or ENVI, you can import the files into IDRISI afterwards.

  2- Interpolation is possible in IDRISI (see the INTERPOL module), but again, we do not recommend this option for data sets with so many missing values.

  Kaera,

  If you access to ENVI, go to the Exelis code library and download the Landsat gap fill script (.sav file). This will add a menu item under preprocessing tools > Landsat. It offer three options for gap filling, triangulation using a single image scene, gap fill using a fill scene and reference scene (global histogram match), and the same option using a local histogram match. The latter provides the best results and if your scenes are relatively cloud- free, and within the same season, you can have great results. It's not ideal, but sometimes you have to use SLC-off data. If you do not have ENVI, there is a stand-alone IDL program developed by Richard Irish that uses the same algorithm as above. Run a web search on Landsat Frame-and-Fill.

  I also tried the Panchroma tool (purchased online) and it seemed to work for most of my tiles. Maybe you can try. If not, just get a GIS freelancer from odesk or geospatialfreelance.com and they will do it for you real quick!

  Hi all,

  Please, could someone kindly help. I am currently working with Landsat 7 images for 2000 and have encountered scan line missing problems with bands 5 and 7. IDRISI manual suggests using reclass module but the description is very brief. I need an advice as to how to resolve the scan lines drop out problem
