Hi,
I'm able to do a silent installation of IDRISI by passing /s to the setup executable, but when I run it as the SYSTEM context in a startup script, it fails silently, returning exit code 0 (success) without installing anything.
Is there anything special I have to do?
Note: when you first launch the exe in silent mode, it may appear that it runs for a few seconds. But if you check Task Manager, it is running in the background.
A silent installation will allow any user to install TerrSet without displaying the installation wizard and does not require user input during installation. Once the silent installation is initiated it will unpack the setup files and proceed to install the software using all default options. Once complete, all files will have been installed in the default location (Program Files (x86)\TerrSet). The software will then need to be activated.
In order to run a silent installation you will need to open the command prompt. Do this from Start Menu, right click and select "Run as administrator" and proceed to enter administrative credentials. This is a necessary step even if you are currently logged in as an administrator. Once open you will need to enter the following line to begin the silent installation:
<Drive>:<Folder><setup.exe> /s
Replace <Drive> and <folder> with the name of the drive and folder where the setup file is located. The " /s" parameter specifies the silent installation.
If installing a multiseat license on a network this can also be prepared as a batch file (.bat) and disseminated from a server to the network of clients. In order for this to be successful you must make the setup file accessible to all clients and post-installation you must copy the float path from the server (in the license folder) to the client license folders. The batch file will need to be run from the client machine to install the software.
To use the Log file option during the silent install, you must use the full path for the log file parameter.
We are unsure of the errors encountered but a recent test of TerrSet installed silently with the above method.

Bump. I am also attempting to install silently with SCCM 2012. I am trying Selva 17. I have even tried with variables shown in the logfile with no luck.
I revisited this problem after receiving Tim's notification this morning, and found that if I extract the executable package (run it, look in %TEMP%, one of the folders in there will be 1.8GiB in size and contain the IDRISI installer files), and then run THAT executable with /s, it seems to work.
Or maybe not.. when I run as the SYSTEM user, it executes for three seconds, returns success, does nothing. ugh :)

Still no dice. Ran it manually without the silent install parameter and without the log file at all, and it prompted me a few times, and gave me a dialog containing "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2343."
MSIEXEC 2343 is "Specified path is empty." I wonder if it's doing something silly, maybe it's trying to stuff files somewhere it shouldn't be.

I tried using the InstallAware variables in the command line as they are listed in the logfile. Some of the arguments were "Silent=True Complete=True Allusers=True" This also did not work and the msi would bomb out with a similar error as you stated. I at the moment have given up and just virtualized it.
I have tried using AdminStudio also, and it appears to install, but when the program is launched, the main executable ends up hanging and errors out.
This answer ignores the question, the fact that we need to run it as the SYSTEM user, not as a normal administrative user. It's a different thing and you have, while I appreciate the effort, answered the wrong question.

I found the answer. Analyzing the logs, there are 3 variables not set when running as System user: DESKTOPDIR, SHORTCUTFILES and QUICKLAUNCHDIR. Furthermore, the setup.exe insist in using the Systemprofile Desktop even if you set DESKTOPDIR (that is used by the MSI in the second stage). So, to avoid error prompts, create the C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\Desktop directory.
